Filing for Divorce in Chugach Census Area

Divorce and dissolution cases in Chugach Census Area are filed at the appropriate superior court. Alaska has two paths to end a marriage: divorce and dissolution. Divorce allows one party to file without agreement from the other. Dissolution requires both spouses to agree on all terms. Both result in a final decree that becomes a public court record.

Alaska Title 25 covers domestic relations law. Divorce cases fall under AS 25.24.160, which sets grounds for divorce in Alaska. The no-fault ground is incompatibility of temperament. Dissolution cases follow AS 25.24.230, which requires both parties to agree and file together. Either type ends up in the same court file system and is searchable through CourtView.

The filing fee for a divorce or dissolution case is $250 statewide. This fee has been in place since May 2023. Alaska courts do not charge different amounts based on the census area. Once you file, a 30-day waiting period must pass before a judge can sign the final decree under AS 25.24.220. Contested cases often take much longer depending on the issues involved.
